It would only take one unthinkable event to disrupt our way of life. If there is a terrorist attack, a global pandemic, or sharp currency devaluation--you may be forced to fend for yourself in ways you've never imagined. Where would you get water? How would you communicate with relatives who live in other states? What would you use for fuel?
Survivalist expert James Wesley, Rawles, author of Patriots and editor of SurvivalBlog.com, shares the essential tools and skills you will need for you family to survive, including:
Water: Filtration, transport, storage, and treatment options. Food Storage: How much to store, pack-it-yourself methods, storage space and rotation, countering vermin. Fuel and Home Power: Home heating fuels, fuel storage safety, backup generators. Garden, Orchard Trees, and Small Livestock: Gardening basics, non-hybrid seeds, greenhouses; choosing the right livestock. Medical Supplies and Training: Building a first aid kit, minor surgery, chronic health issues. Communications: Following international news, staying in touch with loved ones. Home Security: Your panic room, self-defense training and tools. When to Get Outta Dodge: Vehicle selection, kit packing lists, routes and planning. Excellent Resource September 9, 2010 L. Vincent I read one of Rawles' other books and I've got to say this guy knows what he's talking about. Listen, if you need a good resource and how to get started, why, when, and where, get this book today! Of course, like every survival book, not everything can be put in there, but if you take the time and you're not lazy and you actually put this book to use, you'll be in a much better position than anyone else around once the crap hits the fan. A lot of books focus on the initial stages of a collapse and how to make it through the first few months, but not a lot focus on the long term, this book does both in one package. The concept approached here is survival is better in numbers of like-minded individuals(Christian, small government, constitutionalists types). The book also takes the approach of the group working together to rebuild a more sane society. Let's face it, there's not going to be a lot of single super survivalists types running around long after a collapse. Seriously, a single individual will make a mistake in a situation and have a fatal accident, break a bone and be disabled, get seen and shot by a group of bandits, robbed, eaten, have a complete nervous breakdown, or starve to death, etc. versus a group working together would likely survive.
Meh September 7, 2010 Jonathan Lay (USA) This book could have been much much shorter:
1) Devote your entire life and all income to building a second household equiped for an agrarian lifestyle [see index A for resources]
2) Learn the skills of 18/19th century [see index B for resources]
3) Buy and learn to use oodles of firearms [see index C for resources]
4) Pray to Jesus
To be fair, the author is very upfront about this and I should have read more before arbitrarily picking this book. Yes, yes, I'm well aware that if I want to quit my job and join the Amish I will be substantially more prepared for the collapse of industrialized society. And, yes, the essentially passivist stance of the Amish may be a hindrance in the face of looting, so we'll subtract that out. Thanks.
Positives: lots of good indeces.
Very good information September 3, 2010 Phil Guice (Atlanta, GA USA) This book would be better in PRINT rather than in audio book form due to the great number of references given (websites, suppliers, etc...). A tremendous amount of useful information though.
Bull Pucky September 1, 2010 bull pucky 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
This book is a bunch of unrealistic, paranoid, fantasy laced drivel. Almost anything that might have been cool to know, i.e. how to can food, make jerky, build a water pump, make a net, good knots to know, etc. are all outsourced to random websites. So what does this book contain? Not much! Some truly god aweful economic advice, a plea for everyone to buy a safe zone fortress escape property in the hinterlands, and lists, lots of lists.... with 10's (maybe 100's) of thousands of dollars worth of suggested purchases. On the bright side, the book does present a few stores where some expensive high tech gadgets can be purchased, some of which are pretty cool, like a place where you can buy portable solar cells. Am I going to buy them? Probably not, but they are cool. The only people who should buy this book are those individuals whose only hope for recognition in this life is to spend every moment fantazing and hoping for the rapture when their earnest preparation might be well rewarded. If you are not planning on giving up your job and moving to a random Idaho farm, buy a 20 pound bag of rice, a flashlight, and some bottled water and call it a day and save your money. I feel a little bad writing such a negative review since I definetly don't doubt the authors sincercity, just his virginity.
Interesting August 31, 2010 David Penninger I definitely enjoyed reading this book. It is, exactly what it is. That doesn't mean I necessarily agreed with every angle that was taken. Primarily, because I personally am not betting on a grid down situation that lasts for months.
If you want to prepare for long term grid down situations then this book is definitely a must read.
All disaster recovery processes start with disaster scenarios. The scenario in this book is a multi-month and multi-year power grid down situation in the US. What I couldn't determine was if the scenario included a worldwide grid down situation.
If it's not worldwide then we need a chapter on how to get out of the U.S. in the event of a long term grid down.
If it's a worldwide collapse then God help us all. We will have the first massive worldwide population implosion ever recorded. I'd like to see the author address the series of events in that scenario where hundreds of millions of people die within months, hundreds of millions more within 6 months, economies become completely non-existent and gangs roam the countrysides like Attila the Hun destroying everything and killing everything edible. In this scenario the most important skill may be the ability to hide.
