About Barrels
Barrel or cask is a hollow cylindrical container and traditionally made by woods and bound with iron hoops. There are also made of aluminum and plastic. In ancient times, liquid like oil and wine were carried in vessels. Way back before, barrels were the most convenient form or storage container for the people who can afford the superior price. The size of a barrel in a units of volume is about 100-200 L or 30-50 US gallon. In the Mid 20th Century, 55 gallon steel drums began to be used for storage and transport of fluids such as water, oils and hazardous waste. Empty drums occasionally became musical instruments in a steel pan band. Barrels are used for the storage of liquids, from simple water to ferment wine, to age wine and whiskey. The water barrels are used often to collect rain water from dwelling. Some wine fermented in barrel, they used a steel tank or concrete tank. Open tops are usually used for wine for the open atmosphere. The shape of the barrel often have a convex shape, bulging at the middle. This bulge make it relatively easy to roll a well built wooden barrel on its side and also it easy to change the directions with a little frictions. Th iron hoop nearest the ends of a wooden barrel is called the chine hoop, while those nearest to the bulge, ore center is called bilge hoops. Bung is the stopper used to seal the hole in a barrel.
